Robert Ussher was born in Dublin and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he became a fellow in 1611. He was elected Vice-Provost of the college in 1615 and Provost in 1630. In 1629 he was Rector of Lurgan, County Armagh and in 1635 was consecrated Bishop of Kildare.
