Matthew Thornton (1714 - 1803):
Signed the American Declaration of Independence


Matthew Thornton was born in County Londonderry, and his family emigrated to America when he was four years old. He was educated at Worcester, Massachusetts and graduated as a Doctor of Medicine. He practised at Londonderry, New Hampshire, and presided over the Provincial Convention in 1775. In 1776 he was a delegate to the Congress and was one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence. In 1782 he became a judge and later a Senator. He died at Newburyport.
