Nahum Tate (1652 - 1715):
[Doubtful Ulster provenance]

Nahum Tate was born in Dublin into a family of County Cavan origins. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. As well as his own drama, such as A Duke and No Duke and Injured Innocence, he adapted many plays, one of which was King Lear, and in 1692 became Poet Laureate in England. He wrote the hymn 'While shepherds watched their flocks by night' and collaborated in the metrical version of the Psalms.
