Robert Stewart (1739 - 1821): |
Robert Stewart was a Member of Parliament for County Down and in 1789 was created Baron Londonderry. In 1795 he became Viscount Castlereagh; in 1797 he was created an earl, and in 1816 1st Marquis of Londonderry. He was a prominent member of the Volunteer movement. He was opposed to Catholic Emancipation. He died at Mountstewart, County Down, and was succeeded by his son Robert, Lord Castlereagh.
