Charles Stewart was born in Lisburn, County Antrim, and joined the Bengal army in 1781. By 1800 he was Professor of Persian at Calcutta, and in 1827 Professor of Arabic and Hindustani at Haileybury. He wrote a great deal on oriental languages and eastern biography.
