Samuel Black Roe (1830 - 1913):
Surgeon and soldier


Samuel Roe was born in Ballyconnell, County Cavan, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. In 1855 he joined the Gordon Highlanders and served in the Crimea, the Indian Mutiny, the Afghan War and the Boer War and participated in the march to Gandahar. In 1881 he was made a Companion of the Bath. He was appointed Deputy Surgeon General, and served as High Sheriff of Cavan in 1892-1893.
