Thomas Reid (1791 - 1825):
Surgeon and travel writer


Thomas Reid was born in Eglish, County Tyrone. In 1815 he became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. On two occasions he sailed to Australia in charge of convicts and denounced their treatment in a work that he dedicated to Elizabeth Fry. He published Travels in Ireland after having travelled on horseback observing social conditions. He died in Pentonville, England.
