Hugh Balldearg O'Donnell was born in County Donegal and he joined the Spanish army. After the Battle of the Boyne he raised ten thousand men in Ulster. Following a quarrel with Tyrconnell, he joined the Williamite forces and helped to attack Sligo. Before returning to Spain, where he died, he fought for the Austrians in Italy.
