Hugh O'Donnell was born in Glenarm, County Antrim, and was educated at Salamanca in Spain. He was sent to Belfast as curate and in 1784 opened St Mary's Church. In 1808 he was appointed parish priest of Belfast, where he opened St Patrick's Church, Donegall Street, in 1811.
