John Boyce was born in County Donegal and educated at Maynooth. He emigrated to the United States in 1845, eight years after being ordained priest. He published some lectures, and a number of novels, including Shandy Maguire (1848); The Spaewife and Mary Lee, under his pseudonym Paul Peppergrass. He also published lectures on the influence of Catholicity on the Arts and Sciences, and on Mary Queen of Scots and Charles Dickens.
