Alec Newman (1905 - 1972):

Alec Newman was born in Waterford but his family moved to Belfast when he was seven, and he was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and Trinity College, Dublin. He worked for a time as a teacher in Dublin High School, but joined the Irish Times in 1930. He became assistant editor in 1934 and editor from 1954 to 1961, at which point he joined the Irish Press as leader-writer and journalist on current affairs.
