Joseph Murphy was born in Belfast and was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. He was a linen mill-owner. He was President of the Belfast Literary Society, President of the Natural History and Philosophical Society and President of the Linen Hall Library. Among his publications are Habit and Intelligence; The Scientific Basis of Faith; Sonnets and other poems and Natural Selection and Spiritual Freedom.
