James Morgan (1799 - 1873):
Cleric, Presbyterian and philanthropist


James Morgan was born in Cookstown, County Tyrone, was educated in Glasgow and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in Carlow in 1820. He became a minister in Lisburn in 1824, and in Belfast in 1827. In 1846 he was appointed Moderator of the General Assembly. He published theological works and was active in founding the Presbyterian College. He was a noted philanthropist. [Recollections of Life and Times, edited by his son, 1874]
