Henry Montgomery was born in Belfast and went to Alabama, where he started a newspaper. When he returned to Belfast he established the Belfast Illustrated Monthly Magazine and wrote the lives of Steele and Moore and published an anthology, Early Native Poetry of Ireland. He published Essay on Irish Literature in 1840 when he was President of the Rhetorical Society.
