Turner Macan (1792 - 1836):
Soldier

Turner Macan was a captain in the 16th Hussars. He had a thorough knowledge of Persian language and literature and for many years was Persian interpreter to the commanders-in-chief of the British forces in India. He translated and published the work of the Persian poet Ferdousee. He is buried in the East, and a memorial plaque has been erected by his widow in St Mark's Church, Armagh.
