John St Clair Boyd (1858 - 1918):
Surgeon

John St Clair Boyd was born in Holywood, County Down, and was educated at Queen's College, Belfast. He graduated as a medical doctor. He moved to the Birmingham and Midland Hospital for Women, where he worked as a surgical assistant. In 1888 he returned to Belfast and worked at the Hospital for Sick Children, Queen Street, as assistant surgeon. In 1889 he became gynaecologist at the Ulster Hospital for Children and Women. He was then appointed Senior Surgeon to the Samaritan Hospital. He was the first President of the Belfast Gaelic League, which had grown out of the Belfast Naturalists' Field Club, in 1895. He was also President of the Dublin Pipers' Club and adjudicated at musical festivals.
