Donnell O'Cahan inherited property and land around Dungiven, County Londonderry, but lost a third of this to Tyrone. In 1607, after the Flight of the Earls, he was knighted. Suspicion rested on him when his brother joined Sir Cahir O'Doherty's rebellion, and though he was never brought to trial, he was imprisoned in the Tower until his death.
